Honeytrap Extortion Racket Busted in Sirsa

The Sirsa police unearthed and busted a sophisticated honeytrap extortion racket involving fake friendships and online interactions used to lure unsuspecting victims, extort money, and hold them hostage. Eight members of the gang were arrested during the operation.

👥 Modus Operandi — How the Gang Operated

  1. Online Initiation:
    • The racket began when a victim, Jaswant — a resident of Chilkani Dhab village in Sirsa — received a friend request on Facebook from a woman identified as “Khushi.”
    • After chatting on social media and over the phone, “Khushi” invited Jaswant and his friend Subhash to meet her in Fatehabad.
  2. The Trap:
    • The pair met three women, including the woman known as Khushi, at Papiha Park. They were then asked to accompany the group to a relative’s farmhouse in Bhirdana village.
    • Once there, the door was locked behind them, and two men entered, assaulting and detaining Jaswant and Subhash.
  3. Extortion and Hostage Situation:
    • The gang accused Jaswant of inappropriate behavior with their wives, seized both victims’ phones, and held them hostage for several hours.
    • They demanded a ransom of ₹20 lakh for their release. The duo managed to pay ₹90,000 in cash and transferred ₹50,000 online under pressure.

🚓 Police Action and Arrests

  • While being taken toward Sirsa, the victims were able to contact a trusted friend, who informed the police about their location.
  • A police team rushed to the scene near a private hostel at the bus stand and arrested eight suspects, rescuing Jaswant and Subhash safely.
  • The arrested have been identified as:
    • Suresh Kumar
    • Dalbir Singh
    • Shiv Kumar
    • Rajkumar
    • Rajesh Kumar
    • Manoj Kumar
    • Suman
    • Pooja Rani

📦 Evidence and Recovery

  • Police recovered part of the extorted money and two vehicles believed to have been used in the crime.
  • Authorities say the investigation is still ongoing, and further arrests are possible as more details emerge.

📌 Police Statement

Sirsa Superintendent of Police Deepak Saharan said the case was cracked within hours as part of a special drive against organised crime. The rapid response was aimed at dismantling emerging cyber and social-media-based extortion networks in the region.

🔎 What a ‘Honeytrap’ Extortion Racket Is

A honeytrap scheme typically involves creating a false personal or romantic relationship online to lure a victim into compromising situations. The perpetrators then threaten to expose or misuse evidence, often crude personal material or false accusations, to blackmail and extort money from the victim.

Such rackets may involve threats of filing fabricated criminal complaints or leaking sensitive material unless money is paid — a pattern similar to other honeytrap extortion cases seen in various parts of India.

🧠 Why This Matters

  • Digital platforms and social networks can be abused to target individuals emotionally and financially.
  • Law enforcement agencies are increasingly responding with dedicated special drives to curb more organised forms of such extortion rackets.
  • Quick action by police not only leads to arrests but also protects potential future victims by breaking the network.
